To what extent do you depend on opinion leaders to help you out sort your thoughts on topics such as politics/movies/fashion/consumer products etc ?
An opinion leader is an individual who may be a subject matter expert in his field. Therefore, his opinions/ assumptions/thoughts on the given subject would surely have me thinking before I can take a decision.
However, I would have some exceptions to the same. Politics is a subject that really does not excite me and therefore my knowledge on the same is limited. So, when it comes to opinion leaders perceptions on a subject, I would more or less be on their lines rather than draw a conclusion myself. When it comes to Political subjects, I like shows like "Devils Advocate" hosted by Karan Thapar or Arnab Goswami’s "Frankly Speaking". The subjects they put to the person are topics which mostly have remained unanswered or no logical explanation every received. So the final outcome of the show sometimes brings a lot more light to the subjects discussed or debated.
Consumer Products/ movies/ fashion are more out of personal choice likes & dislikes. So even if an opinion leader would have his reasoning towards a trend in fashion, or movies or products, I would still trust a product/ or a movie or a dress based on my personal experience or liking. Likewise, Salman Khan is my fav actor so no matter is a critic or an opinion leader has something negative to say about the movie I would still go to the closes theatre and watch it.
for clothes Levi's is my fav brand, so I would stick to their products even if someone said they were out of fashion or there was a competitor brand which are selling products at half the price. Consumer Products, latest controversy that comes to my mind was the Cadbury Insects issue. There were many articles against Cadbury and to an extent I did restrict myself for a few months, but not too long. Once everything was back to normal, I went to the nearest store and hogged on a Cadbury Dairy Milk.
In short, opinion leaders are speakers with a huge amount of experience behind them. And possibly every argument you put to them in their subject will have a logical reasoning. But few topics are such that until I do not experience, I would not give in to their opinion and change my decisions. Movies, fashion, products are such which are personal. Politics is more generic so I'd rather leave the thinking to our opinion leaders and stand by them.
